FAQS
Do you work with small businesses in Kent and across the UK?
Yes. I’m based in Kent and work with Kent-based clients, but I also support small businesses across the UK.
A lot of the work can be done remotely (strategy, planning, SEO, Google Ads, website improvements, messaging and campaigns), so you don’t have to be local to get proper support. If you are local, we can also arrange in-person sessions where it’s helpful. Being Kent-based means I understand local trading realities, but I’m set up to support UK-wide businesses just as effectively.
What services does a small business marketing consultant typically offer?
A small business marketing consultant can help across your marketing as a whole, not just one channel. In my case, marketing services include marketing strategy, website optimisation, SEO, Google Ads, lead generation, email marketing, social media, local marketing, PR support, and brand collaborations (amongst others).
In practice, the best support is joined up. You want your website, messaging and marketing activity to work together, so you’re not throwing effort at lots of places without getting consistent enquiries.
What does it look like at the start if we work together?
We start with clarity.
That means understanding your offer, your ideal customers, your current marketing activity, what results you’re getting, and where the gaps are. Then we agree priorities and a practical plan. You’ll always know what we’re doing and why. We’ll usually start by spotting the low-hanging fruit, the quick improvements that can make an immediate difference, while also putting the right foundations in place for longer-term growth.
How much does a small business marketing consultant cost in the UK?
It depends on what you need and how hands-on you want me to be.
Some clients prefer an element of marketing coaching and DIY. Others want full ongoing support across all channels. If you tell me your goals and what you’ve tried so far, I’ll recommend the most sensible next step and a realistic level of support. I’ll always be honest if something isn’t worth the spend yet, because protecting your budget matters.
Do you offer marketing coaching packages?
Yes. I offer packages that include marketing coaching time and marketing action time.
To be clear, these are packages of time, not a fixed set of tasks. That means the work can flex month to month based on what will have the biggest impact, while keeping the structure and momentum of a set arrangement.
What results are realistic, and how long do they take?
Some improvements can show quickly, especially if we fix issues that are blocking conversions, like unclear messaging, weak calls to action, or a confusing website journey. Paid campaigns can also produce faster signals when set up properly.
Other areas, like SEO and the longer-term marketing of a small business through content and authority building, take more time and consistency. I’ll always be honest about what is likely to shift quickly, and what needs steady work over a few months. We’ll prioritise what will make the biggest difference first, but the speed and scale of results will depend on where we’re starting from, budget and how much time we have to implement.
Can you help if my website gets traffic but not enquiries?
Yes, and it’s a very common issue.
We’ll look at whether the page answers what your customer is really searching for, whether it’s clear what you do, whether you feel credible quickly, and whether the next step is obvious. Very often there’s low-hanging fruit here. Small changes to clarity, trust and calls to action can make a noticeable difference. Often, it’s not about more traffic, it’s about making the existing traffic convert. Or it’s about getting the right traffic, not just any traffic.
What does your SEO support include?
SEO is about making your website easier to find and more useful to real people.
That can include on-page improvements, technical fixes, content guidance, internal linking, and building credibility over time. The goal is better visibility for the searches that bring the right customers, not just more traffic for the sake of it. I’ll prioritise what will make the biggest difference first, rather than giving you a long list of technical tasks that don’t move anything.
Can a marketing consultant improve my local visibility on Google?
Yes. If you rely on local customers, there are specific things that can make a real difference, like Google Business Profile optimisation, local service pages on your website, location-relevant keywords, reviews, and clear trust signals.
Local visibility is often less about doing more marketing and more about tightening the essentials, so you show up for the searches that matter and convert interest into enquiries.
What should I expect from a marketing strategy if I hire you?
You should expect a clear plan that makes your marketing feel simpler, not more complicated.
We’ll get clarity on your offer and ideal customer, what’s working and what isn’t, where opportunities are being lost, then prioritise the quickest wins and the foundations that support long-term growth. Lengthy strategy documents that never get used are pointless, so I keep it practical and action-led from day one.
Do you offer digital marketing services for small businesses?
Yes. Digital marketing services for small businesses can include SEO, Google Ads, website improvements, email marketing, and social media (both organic and paid), depending on what makes sense for your goals and budget.
The key is choosing the right mix. Digital marketing works best when the foundations are strong, especially your messaging and website journey, otherwise you can spend money sending people to a site that doesn’t convert.
How do you measure success, and what results matter most?
Success should be measured in outcomes that matter to your business, not vanity metrics.
Depending on your goals, that might be improved search visibility, more enquiries, better-quality leads, improved conversion rate, increased bookings, lower cost per lead, or stronger repeat business. We agree what matters upfront, then track progress in a straightforward way. Most small business websites convert a small percentage of visitors into enquiries, often in the 1% to 3% range. All of this also depends on your offer, your market, your current levels of traffic and how well your website does the job once people land on it. With nearly 30 years in marketing and business development, I’m very focused on what actually moves the needle, not what simply looks busy.
Do you only advise, or do you implement the work too?
It can be either.
If you want hands-on support, I can help implement and manage activity across areas like website optimisation, SEO, Google Ads, email marketing, social media and lead generation. If you prefer to do the work in-house, I can coach, plan and review so you stay focused and confident.
How are you different from marketing companies for small businesses?
I’m not an agency, and I don’t try to squeeze you into a one-size-fits-all approach. I also don’t have the same kind of overhead costs that agencies have – or any rigid work structures.
Once we decide to move ahead together, your work stays with me. I don’t pass it to interns or outsource it to unknown third parties. I do the work myself, or will tell you if I work with a carefully selected team of collaborators. My work is tailored, joined up and focused on measurable outcomes, with clear priorities and honest guidance. The aim is progress without jargon, fluff or busywork.
Can you work alongside my existing freelancer or marketing company?
Yes.
Sometimes you need an experienced outside view to tighten the strategy, spot what’s missing, or make sure everything is joined up. I can complement what you already have, or help you decide what to keep, what to improve, and what to stop.
Do you offer one-off help, or ongoing marketing services for a small business?
Both.
Some clients want a one-off service (like a new website with SEO included), a strategy refresh, or help fixing a specific problem. Others want ongoing marketing services for their small business, so they have consistent support and momentum.
What is the best marketing to start with if my budget is tight?
When budget is tight, the priority is usually clarity and conversion first.
That often means improving the website journey, strengthening your messaging, tightening your offer, and making sure you are visible where people already have intent (often search). Paid ads can work well too, but only when the basics are in place.
Do you do Google Ads for small businesses?
Yes.
Google Ads can be a great option when your targeting is right and your landing pages are doing their job. I focus on choosing the right keywords, writing clear ad copy, and targeting the right audience, so you attract the right enquiries rather than paying for clicks that go nowhere. I’ll also be upfront if your website isn’t ready for paid traffic yet, because that’s how budgets get wasted.
Do you manage social media advertising for small businesses?
Yes.
Social media advertising can work well when the targeting, creative and offer are right, and when the landing page matches what people clicked for. I’ll also be honest if social ads are not the best next step and there’s a faster win elsewhere.
Can you help with lead generation for small businesses?
Yes.
Lead generation is usually a mix of the right message, the right channel, and the right next step on the website. We can strengthen the whole funnel, so you’re not relying on luck, word of mouth, or inconsistent bursts of activity. This case study outlines a successful lead generation campaign I recently created for a Kent SME.
Can you help with brand identity and messaging for a new business?
Yes.
Brand identity is not just a logo. It’s how your business comes across, how clear your message is, and whether people quickly understand what you do and why they should choose you. I can help shape your positioning, tone of voice and key messages, then make sure your website and marketing collateral reflect that properly. This is often the difference between looking new and looking credible from day one.
Do you help with marketing collateral and content?
Yes.
That can include website copy, lead magnets, brochures, sales pages, email sequences, and content that supports SEO. The focus is always on clarity and trust, and helping your customer take the next step.
Will I be locked into a long contract?
No. There is no minimum contract time.
We agree scope and expectations clearly, and we keep things simple and transparent, so you feel in control. The best work happens when it’s built on trust, and you can see progress. Marketing isn’t instant, and there’s no magic switch. The timeline depends on your offer, your market, and what condition your website and marketing are in when we begin. What we achieve will also be dependent on your budget and the time we have to work on things.
What should I prepare before I hire a small business marketing consultant?
If you have them, bring your website link, what you sell, typical customer types, what you’ve tried so far, and any numbers you already track (enquiries, bookings, conversion rate, average order value).
If you don’t have numbers, don’t worry. We can still make progress, but a few basics help us move faster.
